Psio Crew & Chveneburebi for the end of ArtZone!

2009-08-24

As we had to postpone ArtZone to year 2009, we decided to organise in December 2008 a collaborative concert of Psio Crew and Chveneburebi - its spectacular success encouraged us to enrich the programme with guest performance of Georgian band in Tbilisi.

Thanks to the support of the City of Warsaw, on December 1st 2008, the ensemble Chveneburebi travelled to Poland. During a week-long stay in Warsaw, they held collective rehearsals with Psio Crew. After few days of intensive effort, the collaboration culminated with a Psio Crew and Chveneburebi gig at the Palladium Club in Warsaw. The event, which brought together two very different highland cultures, was a real smasher. The audience of 900 welcomed the project with huge enthusiasm, revelling in the concert and demanding several encores.

Unforgettable emotions undoubtedly await us aslo this time!

PSIO CREW

Psio Crew are a nine-member group formed in 2004. This experimental project is led by highlanders from the Beskidy mountains who are fascinated by their native folklore. Traditional highland melodies and vocals are spiced up with modern, electronic sounds, forging a brand-new, original sound, never before heard. This stereotype-smashing fusion, bringing together allegedly separate musical worlds (Beskidy folk, drum'n'bass, electro, dub, hip hop, raggamuffin), has entertained both listeners who cannot stand club music and those who hate 'lukewarm vodka' and highlanders' music. During their live performances, Psio Crew also employ smooth-jazz elements - a chance for the female members of the band to charm the audience, and not just with the magic of their voices. One of the group’s strengths is the highlanders' folk and DJs sets, during which traditional highland dancers face off against energetic break-dancers.

One critic has said that in the search of their musical direction, the band bravely left their native roots and familiar environment and moved towards the Caribbean, without losing their spirit.

CHVENEBUREBI
Guest performance

Ensemble Chveneburebi consists of 9 people who originate from different parts of Georgia, enabling them to preserve authentic traditional styles of singing from various regions. Each member of the group presents traditional dances, plays Georgian folk instruments and sings all three voices. All those characteristics give their performances a unique authenticity which is practically impossible to be find elsewhere.

Chveneburebi were actively involved in the campaign supporting Georgia against Russia during the conflict in August and September 2008. Some of the important events during this campaign were performances in Tallinn, where Chveneburebi were invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. The group performed in front of a large audience (about 180 000 people). Concerts were also held at the Viljandi Folk Academy, the Cathedral of St. Karl in Tallinn and in the residence of the President of Estonia.

Chveneburebi regularly organise folklore expeditions to different regions of Georgia. They work on discovering old folk songs and their different variations and presenting them to the public. They also work on archive recordings of Georgian folk songs. The film producer Gia Diasamidze has been continually travelling with the ensemble, recording each significant event in Chveneburebi’s musical life.
